Russia doesn’t want Ukraine to join Nato. From various different interpretations, it has border disputes with Ukraine and does not want to negotiate them with the threat of Nato behind Ukraine. Hence, Russia is warning the West not to involve itself: such is the apparent reason for the accumulation of Russian troops near the Ukraine border.
