Economics, lifestyle: gas prices

Self-tutoring about the price of gas: the tutor mentions some thoughts.

I filled up my wife’s car this morning. I think I recall seeing a price something like 214.9: I was surprised, even having heard it was rising. Whatever it was, $100 yielded 3/4 of a tank. It’s a new reality.

Minimum wage is about 3.8 times what it was when I was in grade 12, while gas prices are about 4.3 times what they were. Foregoing the general topic of inflation, it seems that, indeed, gas has gone up faster than wages.

Whether this is Canada-wide, or whatever, the message I’m getting is clear: “Stop driving gas-powered cars.” Maybe it’s more general: “Stop driving.” Especially in urban areas, the idea is that walking, or the bus, might be better options than driving.

At my age, I realize it’s important to know what side of history you’re on, and try to be on the right side of it for your own best life. Governments seem to be giving the nudge against driving, and there’s much more they can do. It’s perhaps not wise to expect gas to come back down. Instead, perhaps it’s time to consider other, inevitable options.
