Household chores: how long to wait after moving a fridge, before you can plug it in?
Self-tutoring about fridge moving: the tutor mentions a curiosity about it.
Everyone seems to agree that, after moving a fridge, it’s important to wait before plugging it in – at least in some cases. The reason is that the oil that is needed in the compressor may flow out into the tubes if the fridge isn’t sitting upright. Therefore, if the fridge was laid down on its side during the move, it needs to be stood up in operating position, then left unplugged for a while, so the oil will settle back down to where the fridge design counts on it being.
I read, in the manual of a mini-fridge, that if the fridge isn’t upright while being moved, they recommend waiting six hours after it’s set upright before plugging it in.
beko.co.uk recommends waiting four hours – minimum – before plugging in your fridge after it’s been set in its upright position.
Perhaps most interesting is the advice from moversville.com. First, they point out that your fridge should remain upright – always – if you can help it. They continue that, if the fridge, during the move, always remains upright, it can be plugged in, without waiting, once placed in its new location. That said, they acknowledge that, sometimes, a fridge will be oriented on its side while being moved. If so, then however long it was on its side is how long you should wait, once it’s upright, before plugging it in. So, if it was on its side a day or longer, it should be left for 24 hours, upright, before being plugged in. If it was on its side for only 20 minutes, then a 20 minute wait should be enough.
Interesting, eh?
