Grocery shopping: calculation methods

Self-tutoring about ways to estimate a grocery bill: the tutor mentions some thoughts.

When I get around to it, I don’t mind grocery shopping. One idea I hold to, though, is that one should have a pretty good idea of the bill before reaching the till.

Mentally rounding the price of each item, then summing them, is likely the best practical method. It’s how I normally do it when I’m by myself. In such cases the order is usually less than 25 items. Yet, that method isn’t always so easy as the items accumulate beyond that number.

A count of the items, multiplied by a mental average of their cost, can give a ballpark figure.
