Household chores: magic erasers

Self-tutoring about home cleaning: the tutor mentions magic erasers.

Magic erasers seem a necessary part of the household cleaning kit. What are they, and why are they so effective? Moreover, are they safer to use than chemicals like bleach?

Apparently, magic erasers are sponges made from a durable foam. Microscopically, that foam presents an array of cleaning surfaces in a flexible net. When combined with water, the surfaces themselves stiffen, while the overall shape of the sponge remains flexible.

The effectiveness of a magic eraser comes from the fact that it’s more durable than the dirt it’s removing, but still flexible enough to take the shape of the underlying surface it’s cleaning. Therefore, the magic eraser’s cleaning action is physical, rather than chemical.

From my reading, it seems that the Mr. Clean magic eraser is non-toxic.
