Lifestyle: how much dishwasher detergent?

Self-tutoring about dishwasher use: the tutor mentions the question of how much detergent to use.

When I was a kid, it seemed one was meant to fill, but not overfill, the compartments in the dishwasher. A few years back, when we got a new dishwasher, I heard it mentioned that we should not fill the compartments, but instead use much less than that.

We tried that for a couple of years, but often, some dishes came out still dirty. Moreover, other problems began, such as the dishwasher not draining properly.

Finally, the decision was made to increase the dishwashing detergent. We don’t quite fill the compartments, but much closer than before. Now, somewhat miraculously, the dishwasher seems to work much better.
