Politics: religion no excuse for hate

Self-tutoring about politics: the tutor mentions a headline, and some ideas behind it.

The following is according to my understanding.

Marc Miller, who recently re-joined cabinet with languages and culture portfolios, hasn’t hesitated to make his voice heard, with the welcome remark “Religion is no excuse for hate.” Miller has agreement from Yves-Francois Blanchet, leader of the Bloc Quebecois, in this regard.

Some people seem to suggest that banning hate speech contravenes freedom of speech, so is a bad idea on principle. (We have an answer to that in Canada, but that’s for another post.) Nevertheless, it seems somewhat absurd to ban some hate speech yet permit other hate speech. Rather, it seems more consistent to ban all hate speech, or else withdraw regulation of it.
