Household chores: heat-activated microwave wipes
Self-tutoring about cleaning products: the tutor mentions resurrecting some heat-activated microwave wipes.
The following is according to my understanding.
Going through a cupboard that’s been used for non-specific storage for many years, I encountered a few cleaning products which I’ve since put to use. One was a box of heat-activated microwave wipes, by Easy-Off.
The microwave needed some love and attention. I don’t recall when that box of wipes arrived, but followed the easy directions, wondering if they’d still be good.
What’s supposed to happen is this: one puts the sealed packet, which contains a wipe, in the microwave and heats it on High for one minute. During that time, the moisture in the wipe heats up until it blows the packet open, releasing a cleaning mist into the microwave. (For this reason, the packet has a “This side up” indication.) After the one-minute heating, one leaves the microwave closed for another three minutes, letting the vaporized cleaning solution work on its inner surfaces. After that, one opens the microwave, removes the wipe from the packet, and wipes down the inside of the microwave.
In my case, since the packet I put in had dried out, the process failed – at first. (Those wipes might be decades old.)
My wife pointed out that if I just removed a wipe from its bag, soaked it in some water, then placed it in the microwave, the same result would be realized. I took a new wipe from its packet, moistened it quickly at the sink, then set it in a cup with a half-inch of water at the bottom. Next, I put the cup in the microwave and turned it on High for a minute. After that, I waited three minutes with the microwave closed, just like the directions say.
My wife was right, of course: removing the wipe from the cup, I wiped the inside of the microwave. The wipe did a nice job, I thought.
The heat-activated microwave wipes are an example of a product purchased, then forgotten, years ago, but resurrected with success. Fun, eh?
