English: US vs UK spelling: is US spelling always shorter?

Tutoring English, idiosyncrasies come up. The tutor mentions one.

The following is according to my understanding.

As most people are probably aware, the word color in the US might be spelled colour in Britain: it’s the same pattern with favor, labor, and others as well. Someone might get the idea that the US spelling is predictably shorter than that for the UK.

Yet, not always: fulfill in the US is spelled fulfil in the UK.

Interesting, eh?
