English: coordinating conjunctions: a list
Tutoring English, ideas about usage come up. The tutor mentions coordinating conjunctions.
The following is by my understanding.
A coordinating conjunction is one that links two sentences that each could be complete on its own. Such a situation might be as follows:
The rain started suddenly but they continued to play.
Not everyone agrees on the list of coordinating conjunctions, but one might be and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet.
Typically the coordinating conjunctions seem most effective when linking short sentences:
I made coffee this morning so you’ll find the pot full.
There is more to say about coordinating conjunctions and the context of their use. I hope to follow up in at least one future post:)
