Cricket chirping related to temperature: field evidence

Tutoring math, physics, or biology, the relationship between crickets’ chirp rate and the temperature is fascinating. The tutor’s observations agree with theory.

Field crickets, which are most likely the kind I hear right now, are chirping at 160/minute (I just counted). Looking at the graph at priceonomics.com, I expect the temperature to be 82F. Now I check the thermometer: it measures exactly 82F.

Though I didn’t doubt the relationship, I hadn’t expected its exactitude.
