Pop culture: what is a meme?

Self-tutoring about something I should know: the tutor looks into the idea of meme.

I never heard the word meme until my kids started using it, likely when they were in middle school.

Meme seems to mean a point of view or very short story – possibly related as a picture or text – that people share. It can become a point of reference for other situations.

An example of a meme might be “safety buzz” – the premise of intentionally getting drunk before committing an indiscretion, so to be less culpable.

Such is my understanding of meme.
