Retrospect: the cool people

Self-tutoring about aptitude for life: the tutor recalls some people he never knew.

Years ago, when we were new to this neighbourhood, the kids were born – one in 2002, the other, in 2004. I took them out for walks in the stroller or pram, every day, any season. Therefore, I got a flavour for the neighbourhood and others living in it, even though I knew almost none of them.

In my experience, every neighbourhood, just like every class in school, has its cool people. They’re people you might never meet, but wouldn’t mind being, if you couldn’t be you. One such family lived near here, on a corner.

Walking by their house pushing the stroller, I got the impression this family were very cool. I rarely even saw them, but when I did, they were always smiling. They had a lot of vehicles by which you could tell they were very focused on outdoor activities. They had horses as well.

At Christmas, they decorated their house in a way that wasn’t over done, but showed they had a knack for it. They seemed good at Christmas, good at outdoor living, good at having fun…they were just good at life, it seemed.

They’ve been gone many years – I recall their house being for sale around when the mill wrapped up. No doubt, they followed the oil money to Alberta, like most people back then.

Wherever they got to, I wish them Merry Christmas. Of course, someone else lives in their old house. However, they might not have quite the knack for life that cool family showed, so many years ago.

Cheers:)
