Home computer use: a program can store changes?

Self-tutoring about computers: the tutor mentions an experience.

I’m using a Windows 10 computer from 2017. It’s a bit overwhelmed compared to newer models.

Yesterday, while I was typing, this computer restarted without warning. It took a few minutes to come back. When it did, the program I’d been using didn’t re-open by itself.

The file I’d been typing to, I opened with a different program to learn I’d lost about the previous two minutes’ progress.

Curious, I closed that one, then opened the same file with the program I’d been using when the unexpected restart occurred. It was all there, including the last word I’d managed to type.

To me, the situation doesn’t make sense. Yet, I’m thankful I got the file back in one piece.
