Retrospect: holes in the ground

Self-tutoring about people and events from the past: the tutor recalls….

Where I lived in the Annapolis Valley, early 80s, much of the terrain seemed unspoken for. I imagine someone owned it, but no vacant lots had “no trespassing” signs. Moreover, I never heard who owned this or that undeveloped area. If there wasn’t a building on it, you could go there – that’s how it was.

Many such places were cleared, but not of shrubs. They were easy to walk through, since the land there was gentle. When applicable, they were used as shortcuts.

Typically, those deserted places had holes in the ground. They were all the same, about seven feet by six feet and perhaps as deep as four feet.

I never knew what made those holes; recently I realized they were made by an excavator. I don’t recall seeing one working around there, but I’m convinced that’s what must have made the holes.

Now, I wonder a few things:

  1. Did the same entity own all those parcels of undeveloped land, and therefore dug such holes on all of them?
  2. What were they digging for?
  3. Were the digs successful?

Those sites were peppered around; bringing the excavator to each one would have been a hassle.

Curious, eh?
