Retrospect: Saying Pledge of Allegiance after Morning Prayers

Self-tutoring about people and events from the past: the tutor mentions an interesting memory.

When I was a kid in the Annapolis Valley, we said morning prayers and also heard the national anthem played over the PA. Moreover, one year, my class said the Pledge of Allegiance.

My teacher that year was very traditional, from a United Empire Loyalist family, I believe. We didn’t know the Pledge was American, since she’d improvised it a bit. In her version, you would “pledge allegiance to our flag and to the nation for which it stands….”

People there had values, and weren’t prepared to change them. They were willing, however, to adapt as appropriate.

It was a privilege, having been in her class.
