French: s’emparer, part0

Self-tutoring about French vocabulary: the tutor mentions the verb s’emparer.

S’emparer is a French verb that perhaps suggests not only grabbing or seizing, but also taking control of. It’s reflexive: Il s’empare de l’intrus. (He takes hold of the intruder.) In my reading, I’ve seen s’emparer used more often when a person is being apprehended, but prendre or saisir more often when a thing is being grabbed. All three – prendre, saisir, and s’emparer – seem to be interchangeable in some cases.
