Nanaimo is a place where, be it flora or fauna, you might see something unexpected. With its mild climate, so many exotic things can live here – such as the California quail.
Today, walking the grounds at VIU, I noticed some birds with the telltale feather hanging forward of the face. I immediately knew they must be quail, even though I’ve never seen one. But, I wondered: what kind of quail lives here?
I looked it up and found the answer here: California quail. Apparently, they’re not native, but were introduced in the late 1800s.
