Electricity: polarized plugs

Self-tutoring about electricity and household wiring: the tutor looks into the idea of polarized plugs.

As I understand it, a polarized plug has one prong bigger than the other; a polarized outlet has the left slot bigger than the right. The small prong on a polarized plug is the “hot” one.

The reason polarized wiring is safer is that, knowing where the “hot” side is, you can easily install a switch that just opens it – you needn’t open both sides.
