History: why was Assyria so powerful?

If you read the Bible, or hear about ancient history of the Middle East, you’ll likely take notice of Assyria. Its homeland was in what’s today northern Iraq.

According to National Geographic, the Assyrians’ might in battle was partly due to iron weapons as well as engineering: they seem to have been the first to accompany the army with a dedicated engineering body.

The Assyrian Empire eventually included Egypt.
