Bird watching: varied thrush, part n

Around this time of year, one hears long, single-note, flute-like calls. They come, as I understand, from varied thrush.

I’ve written numerous posts about varied thrush. They live here, in the Pacific Northwest, all year. However, I notice them in late winter and early spring out in the yard. Sometimes one will stand on a fence. Other times they hop around on the ground.

Varied thrushes have an orange breast but also a v-shaped black collar which is emphasized on males. One was in the yard yesterday for a long time, picking around the awakening soil of the garden.
