Internet: domain names: example.com

Self-tutoring about domain names: the tutor mentions example.com.

In some literature, example.com might be referenced for a teaching purpose. For instance, a text might read, “Let’s say a new link points to example.com. Then, theoretically, it will be arrived at more often by web crawlers, which may elevate it in search results.” In such a case, the reader is meant to imagine an actual domain in place of example.com. Since each person might imagine a particular domain, it’s easiest to use a generic example: example.com.

IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, has reserved example.com for such use: the domain can’t be registered by a consumer.
