Weather: how much rain last weekend?

Self-tutoring about weather observation: the tutor mentions one.

So far, it seems Autumn has precipitated upon this place: last weekend we had windy weather with rain. How much rain, in particular?

I noticed a bin outside with about 5.5 cm of water in it. Its open end is flared, so gathers from a greater area than its bottom, perhaps by about 20%. So, perhaps 80% of 5.5 cm of rain, or 0.8×5.5=4.4cm, fell here over the weekend.

I dumped the water from the bin after taking the measurement:)
