Animals: water buffalo, part 1

Self-tutoring about animals: the tutor begins about water buffalo.

Water buffalo are native to Asia. They’ve been domesticated for around 5000 years, and it’s estimated that anywhere from 0 to 4000 wild ones still exist. Interbreeding is known to happen between wild and tame ones, and domestic ones – including feral ones – may number over 100 million in Asia alone. Feral ones also live in Australia.

Water buffalo can be 800-1200kg with shoulder height of 190cm and length of 2.8m. They have the largest horns of any animal: the average breadth is 1m, but individuals can have much larger.

Water buffalo are valued as a source of meat as well as for their very fatty milk and for the labour they contribute.
