Art supplies: pastels vs crayons

Self-tutoring about art supplies: the tutor mentions a difference between pastels and crayons.

I’m in an art course these days, and have been experimenting with crayons and pastels. One difference I’ve noticed is that with pastels, you can blend the colors to make in-between ones; with crayons, that seems not to be so.

However, crayons seem less messy to use compared with pastels. It’s easy to imagine that’s why kids are more often given crayons for coloring instead of pastels.
