Autos: a use for an old set of encyclopedias

Self-tutoring about working on cars: the tutor mentions an improvisation.

The following is by my understanding.

As I’ve mentioned numerous times, for instance here, we are decluttering right now. To what end I’m not sure, but it needs to be done.

The other day I came upon, buried in a shelf, an old set of encyclopedias – decades old. It seems unlikely anyone will want them, so I wondered what to do with them. A day later I had a solution.

Working on the van, it seems I run into the problem that the jackstands on hand are too tall for it. I’ve used wooden blocks up until now, but I might experiment with a stack of encyclopedias. The advantage they offer, as I see it, is that adjusting the height will be easy, since one can just add or subtract one or two from the stack as appropriate. Plus, they’re nice and wide, so should be quite stable.

I’m not recommending this to anyone, but I’m planning to try it out:)
