Autos: gas fill cap left or right side, part 1

Self-tutoring about autos: the tutor begins about something he’s long considered.

Years ago, my wife pointed to an arrow in the car. I’d noticed it but never thought it had a function. “It indicates which side the fill cap is on,” she commented. I was intrigued.

Most cars, but not all, have their fill cap on the driver’s side. It’s pointed out that Americans prefer it that way, since it’s easier to know how close you are to the pump on the driver’s side.

Some cars have the fill cap on the passenger side, with the reasoning being that, if filling at roadside – for instance, from a hand-held can – it’s safer on that side. It makes good sense.

Most cars I see have their fill caps on the left. Yet, not all.
