Bible quotes: John 3:3
Self-tutoring about religion and the Bible: the tutor brings up John 3:3.
The other day, in Nanaimo, I saw graffiti that said “Look up John 3:16.” I’ve read the Bible, and recalled that John 3:16 is famous, but not its exact message.
The next day, back home, I picked up the Bible, still open from the last time I’d looked inside, and flipped from the Old Testament to the New. John 3:16 is indeed famous; I’ll let my readers discover it.
I searched the verses previous to John 3:16 to find its context, and settled on John 3:3:
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
I’m no expert on the Bible; I’ve read it through once. Likely I’ve forgotten more of it than I remember, because John 3:3 surprised me, for a couple of reasons:
- I hadn’t realized people on Earth were meant to see the kingdom of God. Jesus is suggesting that, being reborn, you can.
- Being “born again” seems to mean adopting Christ. Herein Jesus may be explaining that the Old Testament cannot show someone the kingdom of God, but belief in Christ can.
The transition from Judasim to Christianity is a fascinating aspect of the two religions.
