Biology: monoecious vs dioecious
The tutor shares another find from his exploration of trees.
Recently reading about the pacific yew, I came upon the term dioecious. Dioecious means that the male and female plants are separate; ie, that this tree might just have male reproductive parts, while another one nearby might have only female flowers. It’s not a term often mentioned, probably since most common plants are apparently monoecious – they have both male and female reproductive organs on the same plant. Kiwifruit, however, is another example of a dioecious plant.
