Biology: what is gene therapy?

Tutoring biology, the concept of gene therapy arises. The tutor gives a top-down idea.

Gene therapy means changing the genetic profile of an organism in order to promote health. Its motivation is generally grounded in one or more goals:

  1. Replacing a detrimental gene with a beneficial one.
  2. De-activating a harmful gene.
  3. Installing a gene that will be beneficial.

One way to accomplish gene therapy is to use a virus, since viruses are able to impart DNA to cells. The idea is to engineer a virus that doesn’t produce disease but instead contains the desired genetic profile, then infect the subject with it.
