Bird watching: downy woodpecker?
Self-tutoring about birds: the tutor mentions a sighting.
Last weekend, I went out momentarily to check the temperature. Immediately I heard a wooden thud-thud-thud-thud…what could it be?
Looking around, I caught the sight of a woodpecker’s head moving back and forth. It had a distinct white-black-white striped pattern on the side of its face, but no obvious red flourish on the head.
The sound it made, and its appearance, were unfamiliar to me. We have flickers and pileated woodpeckers, but their pecking sounds differ from what I heard that time. Moreover, the woodpecker in question was smaller than a pileated one would be.
I checked the guide and believe it to have been a downy woodpecker, which is known to inhabit residential areas.
