Bird watching: hummingbird in late October?
Self-tutoring about local birds: the tutor mentions a hummingbird he saw.
Here, we had a powerful storm yesterday: very windy, lots of rain, etc. This morning, it’s calm. I stepped out to check the air and see what the storm did. Then, I encountered a hummingbird, flitting among the planted shrubs.
It seems said hummingbird most likely is an Anna’s Hummingbird; apparently they live here year-round. They eat nectar and insects. I did see a few insects flying around outside.
To live here year-round seems pretty brave for a hummingbird, although I will admit that even in winter, one does see insects flying around on sunny days. One is led to wonder: are there sources of nectar around here, even in winter?
