Canadian politics: Alberta referendum, part2: Court of Appeal and King’s Bench
Self-tutoring about Canadian politics: the tutor continues about the ever-more interesting issues of the upcoming Alberta referendum.
The following is by my understanding.
I mention the Alberta referendum in my post from Aug 6, 2026. It’s apparently scheduled for Oct 19, 2026.
A question I’m seeing on it is to do with the provincial court system in Alberta. As I understand, the highest court in Alberta is the Court of Appeal, followed by the King’s Bench, which is also a superior court in the province.
It surprised me that the judges of any provincial court would be appointed federally, but apparently it’s true: in Alberta, judges of the Court of Appeal and King’s Bench are appointed by the federal government.
Likely, one can understand Alberta’s wanting to ensure its sovereignty by choosing its own judges.
It seems the Alberta referendum is bringing up some questions that, one way or another, need be.
