Canadian politics: carbon tax, part 1
Self-tutoring about Canadian political issues: the tutor begins about the carbon tax.
Today I looked into the Canadian carbon tax. I will admit I was somewhat surprised.
Apparently, the carbon tax isn’t kept by the federal government; it’s collected at the provincial level, then returned to its province of origin. Therefore, it truly is a redistribution, theoretically. Moreover, if one doesn’t approve of the carbon tax, they may want to look at what their home province does with the proceeds.
One strength of the carbon tax is that it’s a consumption tax, meaning one can reduce how much of it one pays by making lifestyle choices. In particular, a true protester of the carbon tax will stop using fuel, so they don’t pay any of it.
That’s what’s somewhat ironic about the carbon tax: the federal government seems to hope Canadians will pay less and less of it.
