English: oriented vs orientated
Tutoring English, you run into surprises all the time. The tutor mentions a great one.
One time my wife and I were looking at new fixtures. The salesperson was very knowledgeable and helpful and showed us a range of options. The couple at the low end, they pointed out, were “budget-orientated.” As I found out later, this hurt my wife’s ears. She said nothing at the time; afterwards, driving home, she pointed out to me that it’s obviously “budget-oriented.”
Well, it turns out that “oriented” is Yank, while “orientated” is Brit; both are correct. Interesting, eh?
