English: what does sere mean?

Tutoring English, new vocabulary is always welcome. The tutor introduces the word sere.

Recently, reading “The Outsider” by Lovecraft, I noticed his use of the word sere. The context didn’t help me decide its meaning, so I had to look it up:

sere: diminished from age

Lovecraft uses words I find nowhere else. Short, unfamiliar words are particularly appealing additions to the vocabulary.
