English: what does “wherefore” mean?

Self-tutoring about English: the tutor mentions a word he’s often wondered about.

“Wherefore” is a word one might see on occasion. It typically asks or refers to a reason rather than a place or time. “Why” is probably the best word to substitute for it in a question, while “therefore” might be useful to try in a statement that contains it.
