Entertainment: karaoke

Self-tutoring about lounge entertainment and performance: the tutor mentions karaoke developments.

I went to karaoke now and again in the late 90s. Back then, the singer tried their best to render the song well; some did a great job.

Yesterday night I attended a karaoke session; it seems there’ve been developments in the twenty years since. The performances I saw last night not only involved singing, but in fact dancing. It was common for teams to go up and perform, with some dancing while one or two shared the microphone. Spontaneously, other audience members would spring onto stage to join in the backup dancing. They all seemed to know how to blend with the performance and offer support. In some cases the dancing took priority over the singing.

One vocalist was volunteered without his knowing, but gave a great account of himself with the song “Sweet Caroline.” The audience sang and danced, both from their seats and also by joining him up on stage.

Such spirit was very impressive – but then again, these were Americans, who seem to be more spontaneous than Canadians in many cases. I’ve never seen a more supportive crowd, or a more fun evening, of karaoke. Thanks, everyone:)
