Environment: CO2 emissions: Canada vs Brazil

Self-tutoring about carbon dioxide production from energy: the tutor mentions a comparison between Canada and Brazil.

Brazil’s population is around 220 million, while Canada’s is around 39 million. Yet, Brazil’s total C02 emissions are about 20% less than Canada’s. Why would that be?

While Brazil’s energy supply includes 12% hydroelectric (vs 10% for Canada), it’s in biofuels and waste that Brazil really leads Canada, with Brazil at 33% vs Canada’s 4%. Even with geothermal energy, however, Brazil is ahead of Canada, at 4% for Brazil vs 1% for Canada.

One wonders how Canada has been left behind by Brazil in these matters:)
