Homophones (or homonyms): another pair

The tutor returns to a favourite topic.

Do you know what mote means? According to Oxford Canadian Dictionary, it’s “a speck of dust.”

In a game of Boggle the other day, mote emerged; moat was probably the word the writer imagined, but under the pressure of time, they wrote mote, just in case.

Moat, of course, is the steep-walled trench, likely filled with water, that might surround a castle for security. Once again, the meaning is from Oxford Canadian Dictionary.

Mote and moat: another pair of homonyms or homophones, as you prefer. Key either homonym or homophone in the search box of this blog for other pairs of them:)
