Internet: mixed content

Self-tutoring about internet surfing: the tutor mentions mixed content.

I went to a website today that, though served with https, came with a “mixed content” warning. You can tell by a yellow “alert” triangle on the padlock to the left of the address bar.

I wondered how a site delivered with https could have mixed content so clicked the “learn more” link which brought me to support.mozilla.org.

Apparently passive content – which means, as I understand it, display only – may be delivered non-https even on a website that is delivered via https. I would guess that’s because although the page itself comes from a secure site, other content (possibly ads, etc) is also linking into it from elsewhere, possibly from unsecure connection.
