Laundry: load size determination

Self-tutoring about laundry: the tutor mentions a great rule of thumb.

I read instructions for a type of laundry that uses discrete quantities instead of a powder or liquid you measure out yourself. It mentions small, medium, large, and X-large loads and how many units to use for each. Yet, how does one determine if a load is medium or large?

I wondered if such a query would even be answerable on the net – silly me! I found on Good Housekeeping a great determination: Small: 1/3 of the washer. Medium: 1/2. Large: 3/4. (That’s it: never fill all the way:)
