Lifestyle: dates: sugar and fibre

Dietary matters can lead to constant self-tutoring. The tutor shares one of his latest interests.

I’ve become very fond of dried fruits – among them, dates. My wife brought home a 2-pound carton of them a few days back; less than half remain. I’m quite sure I’m the only one who eats them.

According to the carton, dates are 70% sugar. Amazingly, the plain bar of milk chocolate whose label I examined is only 57% sugar.

The dates, however, contain about three times the fibre of the chocolate (7.5% vs 2.4%). Moreover, the dates’ ratio of insoluble fibre to soluble is about 5:1. Possibly the dates’ fibre content is what distinguishes them from many prepared desserts.
