Marine: anchor’s aweigh

Self-tutoring about marine terms: the tutor mentions the idea of “anchor’s aweigh.”

The following is by my understanding.

I haven’t spent a lot of time on ships, but even I’ve heard the expression “anchor’s aweigh.” However, I didn’t know what it meant, or its spelling. Knowing one, leads to knowing the other.

“Weighing anchor” means lifting an anchor from the sea bottom, whence it was holding the vessel in place. Once the anchor chain is suspending the anchor above the sea floor, the anchor is aweigh – hence “anchor’s aweigh.” At that point, the ship can proceed.
