Math: “less than”, part1

Tutoring math, fundamental concepts can sometimes use review. The tutor mentions the concept of “less than.”

The less than sign, <, is not always well understood in math, nor the concept behind it.

The way I would explain less than is that it means “left of” on a number line. For instance, -10 is left of 0 on a number line, so -10 < 0.

There are other ways of relating the idea of less than, but this is likely a good first step.
