Physics: torsion

Tutoring physics, terms and concepts are important. The tutor mentions torsion.

In my previous post I mention torque, which means leverage that can cause a shaft to spin. An example of torque is the case of loosening a bolt with a wrench.

Torsion is related to torque, but refers to the case where the leverage is applied at one end, while the other has yet to break free. In this case, the shaft (such as the bolt) is subject to torsion: one end can spin but the other can’t. The result is a force that acts to deform the shaft, possibly twisting it or even breaking it.

Whereas torque will typically cause rotation, torsion will typically cause deformation or else will restore a temporarily deformed body to its “proper” shape.
