Politics: election 2019: part 0
Self-tutoring about politics: the tutor begins about the results of Canada’s 2019 election.
Hello, Canadians! Congratulations on your vote: you changed the political landscape.
Last night’s two big winners are the Conservatives and the Bloc. Green, rising from one seat to three, seems to be a winner as well. An independent even won a seat, confirming true democracy.
The NDP may have lost or gained, depending on your point of view. In 2015 they won 44 seats, while last night only 24. Yet, against Trudeau’s powerful majority of 2015, they had perhaps much less say than now. With their 24 seats, they can permit or deny the Liberals an effective majority. That’s likely the most Singh could hope for, this time.
Even after their surges, and possibly allying their seats – perhaps a hair-whitening thought to many Bloc and Conservative voters – those two parties can’t match the might of the Liberals. Yet, the Bloc, Conservatives, and NDP, together, do hold a majority, if they can cooperate.
Compared to what we have now, a majority might have been boring.
