Politics: what is identity politics?

Identity politics is somewhat vague, but seems to mean the idea of motivating people based on some identity they share. Moreover, according to Cressida Heyes (see plato.stanford.edu), identity politics can sometimes be recognized by its protest against a more generic identity.
It seems, perhaps, identity politics may be falling out of favour in Canada: Chrystia Freeland suggests she will renounce identity politics.
