Pop culture: Fantasy Island

Self-tutoring about TV shows: the tutor mentions Fantasy Island.

I recall Fantasy Island from the late 70s and early 80s. It was an hour-long drama whose storyline was about people going to the Island to live their true fantasies.

As a kid I watched the show a few times, but sometimes it was scary. Some people’s fantasies revealed evil feelings they had developed because of trauma. Even the devil (or a representative), I seem to recall, appeared in an episode.

In the redux presently running, the storylines contain darkness, but it’s more subtle. It typically highlights the staleness of people’s fantasies rather than the evil behind them.

The show’s theme – seemingly that people are better off not actually living their fantasies – continues to be compelling.
