Smart phones: my Nexus 4 won’t work after 2022?

Self-tutoring about smart phones: the tutor mentions what appears to be a coming problem.

I’ve only had one smart phone: a Nexus 4. I’ve received a message that it may cease to work after 2022. Is that true?

I’ve looked into it briefly, and it seems that 3g won’t be supported after 2022. I looked into my Nexus 4’s settings, and it only gives one preferred network type: 3g.

I’ve read there might be workarounds available, but perhaps I’ll continue about that some other time, after I know more.
